The Portuguese Army has taken delivery of its first UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, marking a significant step towards establishing its own military aviation capability. The aircraft arrived at Tancos military airfield on Sunday, 25 October 2026, and will form part of a new fleet intended for troop transport, medical evacuations and support during emergencies.
The helicopter was transported from Melbourne, Florida, aboard a Portuguese Air Force KC-390 military transport aircraft. Its arrival at Tancos, in the Santarém district, was reported by ECO on Monday.
The delivery marks an important change for the Portuguese Army, which has until now operated without its own dedicated helicopter fleet. The aircraft will join a new helicopter support, protection and evacuation unit being established at Tancos, giving ground forces access to aircraft specifically assigned to their operational needs.
Portugal already operates Black Hawk helicopters through its Air Force, particularly for fighting rural wildfires. The significance of the latest delivery is therefore not the introduction of a new aircraft type to the country, but the development of an independent helicopter capability within the Army.
Transport, medical evacuations and emergency response

The UH-60 Black Hawk is a multipurpose military helicopter widely used for transporting personnel and equipment, supporting ground operations and evacuating casualties from difficult locations.
For the Portuguese Army, the new aircraft are expected to carry out tactical transport, troop deployment and extraction, logistical support and medical evacuation missions. They may also be deployed during natural disasters and other civil emergencies, providing additional resources when military assistance is required.
The programme forms part of a broader effort to modernise Portugal’s armed forces and improve their ability to respond to operations at home and abroad. However, the arrival of the first helicopter does not mean the new Army unit is already fully operational. Training pilots and maintenance personnel, preparing infrastructure and integrating the aircraft into military operations remain essential parts of the process.
A programme worth more than €40 million
The acquisition is included in Portugal’s Military Programming Law, which provides the framework for long-term defence investment.
A government order published in the Diário da República in 2024 authorised expenditure of up to approximately €40.9 million, excluding VAT where applicable. The amount covers more than the aircraft themselves, including equipment, components, training and the technical support needed to operate and maintain the fleet.
The final number of helicopters has not been entirely clear in the published information. While the latest reports refer to four Black Hawks, the Army previously described the programme as an acquisition of three helicopters with an option for a fourth. It has not been confirmed in the available reporting whether that option has since been exercised.
Under the previously announced delivery schedule, further aircraft were expected to arrive progressively through 2028.
Tancos is also undergoing investment to accommodate the new aviation unit, with improvements to its facilities and provisions for the training of future Army pilots and mechanics. The wider project has been estimated at around €50 million, encompassing the helicopters, supporting infrastructure and personnel training.
For the Portuguese Army, the immediate milestone is the arrival of its first Black Hawk. The development of a fully functioning helicopter unit will depend on the remaining deliveries and the completion of the training and infrastructure programme.
