Portugal has been ranked the best destination in the European Union for getting married, according to a study comparing all 27 member states. Its combination of relatively affordable accommodation, dining costs and favourable weather helped it secure first place. However, the ranking is based on a private index rather than a direct assessment of wedding experiences or overall ceremony costs.
Portugal achieved a score of 87.69 out of 100 in the Wedding Destination Index, attributed to US-based company DressPreservation.com. Cyprus followed closely with 87.31 points, while Greece ranked third with 85.
The study assessed five factors: food and accommodation prices, the number of five-star hotels, long-term weather conditions, wedding-related Google searches and social media activity on Instagram and TikTok.
These indicators combine practical considerations with measures of a destination’s online popularity. They offer an insight into what makes a country appealing for weddings abroad, although they do not establish which destination provides the best experience for every couple.
Why Portugal Came Out on Top
One of Portugal’s main advantages is its relatively competitive pricing for accommodation and dining.
According to the figures provided for the study, the country recorded a price index of 73.6, placing it 26.4% below the EU average for those categories.
For couples planning a destination wedding, accommodation and meals can account for a substantial share of the overall budget, particularly when guests are travelling from abroad and staying for several nights.
That said, these figures do not mean a wedding in Portugal is necessarily 26.4% cheaper. Venue hire, catering packages, photography, decorations, transport and other services can vary considerably depending on the location and season.
Weather was another factor working in Portugal’s favour. The country scored 89.74 out of 100 in the index’s climate category, placing it among the highest-ranked destinations in the study’s top ten.
A generally mild climate makes outdoor ceremonies appealing across much of the country, although rainfall, heat and seasonal differences still need to be considered when choosing a date.
From Historic Estates to Vineyard Weddings

Portugal also offers a variety of settings for couples looking to marry abroad.
Around Lisbon, the palaces and historic estates of Sintra provide a very different atmosphere from the vineyards and riverside properties of the Douro Valley.
In the Alentejo, traditional country estates, known as quintas, offer rural surroundings, while the Algarve attracts couples interested in coastal scenery and outdoor celebrations.
This variety gives couples a choice of locations without limiting them to a single style of ceremony.
However, the cost of a destination wedding depends on more than the setting itself. Accommodation for guests, airport transfers and transport between the ceremony and reception can significantly affect the final budget.
A venue that appears affordable may prove more expensive once those additional arrangements are included. Couples should therefore compare detailed quotes and check which services are covered, including equipment, staffing, overtime and bad-weather alternatives.
What the Ranking Really Tells Us
Portugal’s first-place position is a positive indicator of its appeal as a wedding destination, but the results require some perspective.
The Wedding Destination Index is a private ranking based on criteria and weightings selected by its publisher. Google searches and social media hashtags, for example, can help measure interest in a destination but do not necessarily reflect the experiences of couples who have married there.
The margin between Portugal and second-placed Cyprus is also narrow, at just 0.38 points.
DressPreservation.com had previously placed Portugal first in a separate worldwide wedding destination ranking reported in May 2026, although that study used a different scope and scoring system.
For couples considering a wedding in Portugal, the European ranking highlights some genuine practical attractions, particularly accommodation costs and climate. The actual suitability of a destination will still depend on the time of year, the number of guests, the venue and the overall budget.
